Closed Circuit Television is a system in which the signals are not publicly broadcasted but rather monitored mainly for the sake of surveillance and security purposes. CCTV relies on a strategically placed camera system and an abundance of cables linked back to a monitor, or group of monitors, usually located in the security room of a building. The system is made for viewing by a restricted number of people who have access to the devices. There are many different options available with regards to systems (analogue or digital) type of cameras, cabling used (wireless is now available), and recording devices. Systems can be monitored actively by people or passively through software recordings stored to be viewed at a later time. Many new systems allow for extra features such as the ability to zoom in on objects or people, motion detection, higher resolutions, day and night settings, and the ability to access and control the monitoring system remotely from devices such as a mobile phone. Many businesses and facilities deploy CCTV as a deterrent and protection against crime and damage and as a safety measure for residents or employees of a building.
